What this category recognizes
Historical fiction fails in two opposite directions. Some books are researched impeccably and read like a museum tour. Others move well but are populated by contemporary people in period clothing, thinking thoughts nobody in that century could have had.
Recognition here requires both: a period rendered accurately enough to be trusted, and a narrative that would work even if the reader knew nothing about the era.
The category covers any setting the author did not personally live through. Fictionalised accounts of real people are assessed here rather than in Biography.

Production Quality and Presentation
Trade-standard production, plus an author’s note distinguishing record from invention where relevant.
Category Relevance
Whether the period is doing work. If the story could be relocated to the present without loss, the setting is decoration.

History
A period, event, or movement, researched and interpreted.
Tell: everything in it is claimed as fact.
Biography
One real life, researched and reconstructed.
Tell: the subject is a person, and it is nonfiction.
Questions about entering a historical fiction book
How much invention is acceptable?
As much as the book is honest about. An author's note distinguishing record from invention is standard for the form.
My novel is set in the 1980s. Is that historical?
Yes, if you did not live through it as an adult participant in the events depicted. Where genuinely borderline, enter both this and Contemporary Fiction.
Do I need to cite sources?
Not formally. An author's note describing your research is assessed as part of presentation.
