The standard
The International Impact Book Awards Judging Process
Every book is read in full and measured against ten published pillars. This is the whole process, start to finish, published before you submit.
The Foundation
The International Impact Book Awards
Standard of Excellence
One fixed bar, published before you submit, applied to every book in the category it was entered in.
The International Impact Book Awards is a standards-based recognition program. Your book is not entered into a contest against other authors for a limited number of places. It is read against the published Standard of Excellence, and if it meets that standard it receives the International Impact Book Award in its category.
The bar is not raised in a strong cycle or lowered in a quiet one, and it is not adjusted to fill a room. Some categories recognize several books in a cycle and others recognize none at all.
What the award says about your book is that it was read cover to cover and held to a fixed standard, not that it happened to be stronger than whoever else entered that month.
The process
How a book is evaluated
Every book is read in full.
Step one
Assessment by LMAS
The Literary Metric Assessment System is our proprietary evaluation system. It reads the complete manuscript and assesses it against all ten pillars. Because every submission runs through the same instrument, a book submitted in March is measured by the same yardstick as one submitted in November.
Step two
Review by our lead reviewer
An instrument produces consistency. It does not produce judgment. Every book is then read in context by our lead reviewer against the expectations of the category it was entered in, because excellence in a memoir does not look like excellence in a business book.
Step three
Determination
The book is measured against the standard, never against other submissions. A book that meets it receives the award and its author becomes a Distinguished Author. A book that does not is not recognized this cycle, and is never listed publicly.
Behind the determination
Every book that reaches our lead reviewer has already been prepared and checked. A team handles intake, verifies each book’s details and the category it was entered in, and maintains the records that keep assessment consistent from one cycle to the next.
They do not score books and they do not decide outcomes. What they do is make sure that when a book is read, nothing about it has been missed.
The criteria
The 10 Pillars of the
Standard of Excellence
Every book is assessed across all ten. They fall into four groups: how the book is written, what it contains, what it does for the reader, and how it is finished.
The Writing
Pillars 1–3
Three separate questions: who is speaking, how the sentences are built, and how the book is assembled.
Pillar One
Voice, Tone and Style
Whether the book sounds like someone in particular. We look for a voice that is distinctive, consistent from first page to last, and suited to the work it is carrying. Excellence here means language that feels chosen rather than reached for, and a tone that holds steady even when the subject shifts.
Assessed: distinctiveness of voice, consistency of tone, freshness of phrasing, naturalness of dialogue.
Pillar Two
Craft and Technical Execution
The sentence-level command of the writing. Clarity, grammar, rhythm, and the discipline to show rather than summarize. Excellence here means prose that never makes the reader work to understand what is meant, and moments that are dramatized on the page rather than reported after the fact.
Assessed: clarity, grammar and mechanics, sentence rhythm, scene work over summary.
Pillar Three
Structure and Organization
How the book is built. Chapter architecture, pacing, transitions, and whether the reader always knows where they are. Excellence here means a structure that carries the reader forward without them noticing it, and a book that is complete from front matter to back.
Assessed: chapter architecture, pacing, transitions, completeness of front and back matter.
The Substance
Pillars 4-5
What the book brings, and how far it goes into it.
Pillar four
Originality and Concept Strength
Whether the book brings something of its own. Not whether the subject is new, since most subjects are not, but whether the treatment is. Excellence here means an angle, a structure, or an insight a well-read person in that category would not already hold.
Assessed: originality of premise, distinctiveness of approach, freedom from formula.
Pillar five
Depth of Content and Insight
How far the book goes into its own subject. Excellence here means a book that keeps going past the point where a lesser one would stop, offering nuance, complication, and understanding rather than a competent summary of what is already known.
Assessed: depth of understanding, nuance, substantiation, willingness to sit with complexity.
The Reader
Pillars 6–8
Three different effects: whether the book delivers what it promised, whether it is felt, and whether it stays.
Pillar six
Audience Impact and Purpose Fulfillment
Whether the book does the job it set out to do for the reader it was written for. Every book makes a promise on its cover and in its opening pages. Excellence here means that promise is delivered in full, to that specific reader, rather than partially to a general one.
Assessed: clarity of purpose, delivery on the book’s own promise, service to its intended reader.
Pillar seven
Emotional and Psychological Impact
Whether the book is felt as well as understood. Excellence here means writing that produces a genuine response, earned by what happens on the page rather than asserted by the narrator. A book can be accurate, useful, and well made and still not reach the reader. This pillar asks whether it did.
Assessed: authenticity of emotion, psychological truthfulness, whether feeling is earned rather than stated.
Pillar eight
Overall Impact and Distinction
What the book amounts to as a whole. The other pillars examine the parts; this one asks what the reader carries away when the book is closed. Excellence here means a book that leaves something behind: a shift in perspective, a passage that stays, a way of thinking the reader did not arrive with.
Assessed: the lasting impression of the complete book, memorability, whether the whole exceeds its parts.
The Finished Book
Pillars 9-10
The object itself, and whether it belongs where it was entered.
Pillar nine
Production Quality and Presentation
Whether the finished book meets the standard of top-tier published work. Cover, interior formatting, typography, and layout. Excellence here means a book that could sit on a shelf beside any professionally published title in its category without looking out of place, and nothing in its production that interrupts the reading.
Assessed: cover design, interior formatting and typography, layout, overall production polish.
Pillar ten
Category Relevance
Whether the book fulfills the promise of the category it was entered in. Every category carries expectations, and a reader who picks up a memoir is looking for something different from a reader who picks up a business book. Excellence here means a book that does not merely belong in its category but delivers what that category promises.
Assessed: fit to category conventions, service to that category’s reader, fulfillment of category expectations.
A book is assessed across all ten pillars, then measured against what those pillars mean inside the category it was entered in.
The same ten pillars govern Author of the Year
Author of the Year is our annual competition, entered separately and closing on a published date each year. Books entered there are read by the same system, against these same ten pillars, in the category they were entered in. There is not a second standard.
What changes is what happens after the reading. Here, your book is measured against the standard and recognized if it meets it. There, the strongest books in each category become finalists and are set against one another, and one Author of the Year is named per category.
The recognition
What
Distinguished
Means
A book that meets the Standard of Excellence receives the International Impact Book Award in that category, and its author becomes a Distinguished Author.
If your book meets the standard
- The International Impact Book Award in every category it met
- The Distinguished Author designation
- Your official emblem and Certificate of Recognition
- A place in the Impact Archive
- An invitation to The Impact Honors & Gala Weekend in Phoenix
If it does not, this cycle
- Your result for every category you entered
- An open invitation to submit again
- You are never listed publicly
No list of authors who did not meet the standard is ever released. Authors who want to know how their book read against each of the ten pillars can add an Impact Assessment Summary when they submit. It is delivered with the result either way.
questions
Questions about how books are judged
Yes. The complete manuscript is assessed, not a sample, a synopsis, or the description you supplied. This is the single most important difference between a real evaluation and a certificate that arrives in exchange for a fee.
Because a single judgment hides its own reasoning. A book can be beautifully written and structurally broken, or deeply insightful and poorly produced. Assessing ten distinct qualities means the outcome reflects the whole book rather than whichever quality happened to stand out first.
Every pillar is assessed for every book. The determination reflects the book as a whole, read against the expectations of its category, rather than a single quality outweighing the rest.
No. Expedited Results changes when your book is read, not how it is assessed. Event tickets, add-ons, and any other purchase have no bearing on any determination. No offer is presented to you between the moment you submit and the moment you receive your result.
Not in this program. Your book is measured against the Standard of Excellence and nothing else. Author of the Year, our annual competition in Hollywood, works differently and is entered separately. It is judged against these same ten pillars. Compare the two programs
Your result normally arrives in 10 to 12 weeks. With Expedited Results it arrives in 3 to 4. You are told the outcome for every category you entered.
It depends on what you want from one. No award sells a book on its own. What recognition provides is third-party credibility you can point to on a cover, in a pitch to a bookstore or a podcast, and in a media kit. If you are weighing programs, ask three things of any of them: are the criteria published before you pay, is the recipient list public, and is anything else being sold to you along the way.
The criteria
The 10 Pillars of the
Standard of Excellence
Every book is assessed across all ten. They fall into four groups: how the book is written, what it contains, what it does for the reader, and how it is finished.
Writing Quality
The prose is distinctive, precise, and memorable. The author’s voice is fully developed and consistent from page to page. At its best, the writing holds its own against published work at the top of its category, and nothing pulls the reader out of the experience.
Reader Impact & Transformation
The book delivers something real to the reader: a shift in perspective, new knowledge, or an emotional experience that stays with them. Excellence here means the reader can point to something specific they carried away, not just a pleasant read.
Professional Presentation
The finished book, including its formatting, layout, and overall production, meets the standard of top-tier published work. Nothing about the physical or digital presentation gets in the way of the reading experience.
Originality & Contribution
The book brings something genuinely fresh, offering a clear contribution to its category rather than retreading familiar ground. Excellence here is a distinctive angle, insight, or approach that readers will not find elsewhere.
Category Relevance
The book fully honors the expectations and conventions of the category it is submitted to, while serving its intended audience. Excellence means the book does not just belong in its category, it fulfills what that category promises readers.
A book is evaluated holistically across all five pillars, then measured against category-specific expectations to reach a final, per-category determination.
