What this category recognizes

Women’s fiction is a genre rather than an audience label. It is defined by what drives the book: a woman’s emotional journey, and the relationships, decisions, and reckonings that shape it.

The category covers novels of friendship and family, midlife and reinvention, motherhood and its absence, grief and recovery, and stories where a woman’s interior arc carries the narrative. Romance may be present; if the love story is the book, enter Romance. Authors of any gender may enter.

What the standard looks like here

The ten pillars apply to every category. This is how each one is read when the book is women’s fiction.

The Writing

Pillars 1-3

Voice, Tone and Style

Whether the interior voice is specific rather than assembled from convention.

Craft and Technical Execution

Whether emotional turning points are dramatised rather than narrated.

Structure and Organization

Whether the arc builds toward a genuine change rather than arriving at one.

The Substance

Pillars 4-5

Originality and Concept Strength

Whether the book brings something to well-worked emotional territory.

Depth of Content and Insight

Whether the protagonist is allowed to be difficult, wrong, or unresolved.

The Reader

Pillars 6-8

Audience Impact and Purpose Fulfillment

Whether a reader recognizes something true about a life like the one depicted.

Emotional and Psychological Impact

Whether the feeling is earned by what happens rather than asserted.

Overall Impact and Distinction

What the reader carries about the woman at the center.

The Finished Book

Pillars 9-10

Production Quality and Presentation

Trade-standard editing, typesetting, and cover design.

Category Relevance

Whether a woman’s interior journey genuinely drives the book.

Questions about entering a women's fiction book

Can male authors enter this category?

Yes. The category is defined by the book, not the author.

What is the difference between this and Romance?

The engine. If the love story is the book, Romance. If the woman's own arc is, here.

Is my novel too dark for this category?

No. Grief, illness, abuse, and unresolved endings are all assessed on the same standard.
