Biography book awards
Recognition for biography that makes a life comprehensible rather than merely documented. Every book is read in full and measured against our published Standard of Excellence.
What this category recognizes
Biography is the reconstruction of a life the author did not live. It requires research a reader can trust and a narrative that carries someone who arrived knowing nothing about the subject.
The category covers full-life and partial-life biography, group biography, biography of the obscure as well as the famous, and books about a person written from letters, interviews, or archives. Books about the author’s own life belong in Memoir. Fictionalised accounts of real people belong in Historical Fiction.
What the standard looks like here
The ten pillars apply to every category. This is how each one is read when the book is a biography.
The Writing
Voice, Tone and Style
Whether the biographer is present without competing with the subject.
Craft and Technical Execution
How evidence becomes narrative. Whether sourcing carries the story or interrupts it.
Structure and Organization
Whether the shape serves the life. Chronology is not the only option and is not always the right one.
The Substance
Originality and Concept Strength
Whether the book has a reason to exist, particularly where the subject has been written about before.
Depth of Content and Insight
Whether the book interprets rather than recounts, and whether it is honest about what the record cannot tell us.
The Reader
Audience Impact and Purpose Fulfillment
Whether a reader unfamiliar with the subject finishes understanding why they mattered.
Emotional and Psychological Impact
Whether the subject becomes a person rather than a chronology.
Overall Impact and Distinction
Whether the reader’s understanding of the life is genuinely changed.
The Finished Book
Production Quality and Presentation
Trade-standard production, with accurate citation and any images, family trees, or timelines the reader needs.
Category Relevance
Whether one life is genuinely the subject.
Questions about entering a biography
Can I write about someone still living?
Yes. Books about living subjects are assessed on the same ten pillars, including on how fairly the subject is handled.
Is a biography of an ordinary person eligible?
Yes. Fame is not a factor. A well-researched life is assessed on the same standard whoever lived it.
My book is about a group rather than a person. Which category?
Here, if the people are the subject. History, if the period or movement is.
