Poetry book awards
Recognition for poetry collections where the individual poem and the whole book both hold. Every collection is read in full and measured against our published Standard of Excellence.
What this category recognizes
A poetry collection is assessed twice: as a set of individual poems and as a book. Collections often succeed at one and not the other, and both matter.
The category covers formal and free verse, prose poetry, spoken word and performance poetry in written form, verse memoir, devotional and spiritual poetry, and thematic collections. Any form, any subject, any length.
What the standard looks like here
The ten pillars apply to every category. This is how each one is read when the book is a poetry collection.
The Writing
Voice, Tone and Style
Whether a distinctive voice runs through the collection rather than shifting between influences.
Craft and Technical Execution
Line, image, sound, and the discipline of the individual poem. Whether form, where used, is controlled.
Structure and Organization
Whether the collection is arranged. Excellence here means an order that builds rather than a set of poems in the sequence they were written.
The Substance
Originality and Concept Strength
Whether the imagery and framing are the poet’s own.
Depth of Content and Insight
Whether the collection deepens as it goes rather than restating its opening position.
The Reader
Audience Impact and Purpose Fulfillment
Whether the collection delivers what it sets out to do for its reader.
Emotional and Psychological Impact
Whether the poems land, and whether the effect survives a second reading.
Overall Impact and Distinction
Whether the book is more than the sum of its poems.
The Finished Book
Production Quality and Presentation
Typesetting that respects line breaks and white space. Poetry is more vulnerable to poor layout than any other form.
Category Relevance
Whether the book is genuinely a collection rather than an assembly.
