What this category recognizes
A collection is assessed as a set of stories and as a single work. The strongest have a reason to be together beyond having been written by the same person.
The category covers single-author collections, linked story cycles, novellas gathered together, and multi-author collections of short fiction. Collections of poems belong in Poetry; multi-contributor collections that are not fiction belong in Anthology.

Whether a recognisable sensibility runs through the collection while individual stories remain distinct.
Craft and Technical Execution
Command of the short form, particularly endings, which is where most collections weaken.

Originality and Concept Strength
Whether the collection has a reason to exist beyond assembly.

Whether it is genuinely a collection of short fiction.

Poetry
A collection of poems, by one poet.
Tell: it is verse.
Short Story Collection
Short fiction, by one author or several.
Tell: they are stories, and it is fiction.
Anthology
Work by multiple contributors gathered around a theme, fiction or nonfiction.
Tell: many people wrote it, and someone assembled it.

How many stories does a collection need?
There is no minimum. It is assessed on what it does, not its length.
Are linked story cycles eligible?
Yes, and they are assessed on both the individual stories and the cumulative effect.
My collection has several contributors. Which category?
Either this or Anthology. If it is short fiction, this category fits. Recognition goes to the submitting author in both cases.
