Crime fiction book awards
Recognition for crime fiction that takes its consequences as seriously as its plot. Every book is read in full and measured against our published Standard of Excellence.
What this category recognizes
Crime fiction is interested in the crime itself: why it happened, what it did to the people around it, and what the response reveals. That distinguishes it from mystery, where the crime is a puzzle, and thriller, where it is a threat.
The category covers noir, hardboiled, organised crime, procedurals where the institution is the subject, prison and courtroom narratives, and literary crime. Books written from the perpetrator’s perspective are assessed on the same standard as those written from the investigator’s.
What the standard looks like here
The ten pillars apply to every category. This is how each one is read when the book is crime fiction.
The Writing
Voice, Tone and Style
Whether the voice carries the moral weight of the material without commenting on it.
Craft and Technical Execution
Whether procedure and detail are accurate enough to trust and light enough to move.
Structure and Organization
Whether the aftermath is given as much shape as the act.
The Substance
Originality and Concept Strength
Whether the book brings something to a heavily worked field.
Depth of Content and Insight
Whether it examines cause rather than only consequence.
The Reader
Audience Impact and Purpose Fulfillment
Whether it delivers what a crime reader came for.
Emotional and Psychological Impact
Whether the cost registers on the people in the book.
Overall Impact and Distinction
Whether the reader is left with something beyond the outcome.
The Finished Book
Production Quality and Presentation
Trade-standard editing, typesetting, and cover design.
Category Relevance
Whether crime and its consequences are genuinely the subject.

Thriller
Momentum and escalating danger.

Crime Fiction
Crime and its consequences, from any perspective.
Tell: the interest is the crime itself and what it does to people.
Questions about entering a crime fiction book
My novel is based on a real case. Which category?
Crime Fiction if it is invented or dramatised. True Crime if everything in it is claimed as fact.
Is noir assessed differently?
No. It is assessed against the same ten pillars, read through what noir promises.
Can I write from the criminal's perspective?
Yes. Perspective is not a factor in assessment.
