What this category recognizes
A mystery is a contract. The reader is invited to solve something, and the book undertakes to give them what they need. Breaking that contract, by withholding the crucial fact or producing the answer from outside the story, is the failure this category is most attentive to.
It covers cosy mysteries, amateur sleuths, procedurals where the puzzle leads, historical mysteries, and locked-room and closed-circle novels.
